I investigated how the use of different materials and processes could help me elicit feelings of nostalgia for an earlier era of a city that is constantly evolving. Manhattan has been transforming for hundreds of years now, but it has always managed to preserve its history - a 1970s skyscraper in midtown neighbors a brick pub from 1884. I took advantage of the manual aspect of darkroom photography to intentionally imperfect my prints and make them appear antique. I exposed part of the film strip in Images  #3, #6, #9, #11 and #13 and printed the last one smaller for an old Polaroid look. The other half of Image #13 is intentionally blurred to forgive the modernity of the buildings surrounding the Empire State, as they weren’t there during the time period I’m trying to emulate. My goal with this investigation was to find the most effective way to purposefully imperfect the technique to make a new place look old again. I chose analog photography as my medium for this very purpose, simply the mention of a material that comes from before the digital age forces the viewer into a mindset of the vintage and the historic before they even take a deep look at the photograph.
