This investigation demonstrates how my close relationships with my subjects allowed me to expand on my original idea of what a candid is — a truly honest portrait. Through this investigation I redefined what a candid photograph is to include photos where my subjects are looking directly at the camera. Images 3, 6, 8, and 12 are what I considered to be candids before my investigation started. I first experimented with photos where my subjects were hiding their faces, yet still had a genuine quality to them, such as in image 1, 4, and 15. In the picture on the left in 4, my subject is looking down and the straight on angle ends up concealing most of her face; I felt this image lacked the intimacy present in the other photos. So, for images 2, the right photo of 4, 8, and 12, I composed from a lower angle, to capture more of my subject’s face and expression. I tested out including photos where my subjects were looking directly at the camera in images 1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 14, and 15. I ultimately found that I was able to shoot a new type of candid image, one that even though my subjects knew they were being photographed, I could still capture them unguarded and honestly.
