The question that guided my sustained investigation is: How did the rise in the modern cultural significance of Japan beginning in the late-1900s affect traditional Japanese tradition and values?

I have always been fascinated with both historic and contemporary Japanese culture, which is why I chose this sustained investigation. Over the course of my work, I became interested in creating abstract, colored, and layered backgrounds, something I had not done before. I liked the effect of the contrast of color pencil, marker, and pen on top of the painted backgrounds, and how the artwork ended up being as much about the backgrounds as the foregrounds. With each piece, my vision got more and more focused as I became increasingly comfortable with the new techniques I was implementing and became clearer in the ideas I was trying to express.
