I have always been interested in interior design because I love how different shapes and colors can be combined to create different moods in an environment. For my sustained investigation I chose to approach 2D design in much the same way I would design an actual interior, using different combinations of shapes, colors, patterns, and textures to create images I would be happy to reside in.

I began my sustained investigation drawing plants from observation. I drew what I saw while adding my own twists, emphasizing different shapes and colors.  My goal was to create uncluttered images to project a feeling of calm, so I experimented with different ways to balance this minimalism with enough detail or variety to keep the images visually interesting. In Image 2 I broke up the negative space, and in 3, 4 and 7, I used patterns to create a focal point or add interest or texture. I enlarged the plant in Image 5 so that the leaves break up the background space, and in 6, the whole space is activated in a pattern of negative and positive space interacting with each other. Overall, I was inspired to create to create calm images with a little bit of liveliness.
