I investigated how to evoke haunting qualities and ambiguous narratives through a series of mixed media images.

I incorporated qualities of two genres, film noir and surrealism, to create eerie moods and to suggest narratives that have an unsettling feeling. I used harsh shadows in several images (1,2,4,5,6)  to evoke a feeling of mystery commonly found in film noir. In other images, still reminiscent of film noir, I tried to add levels of ambiguity and surrealism through the addition of collaged silver gelatin prints. In several images, the viewer is able to observe more surroundings and the composition becomes more detailed, contributing to a peculiar narrative. As I progressed my artwork became more surreal; the vines and facial expression in image 6, the ghostly reflection in image 8, the eerie shadow in image 9 and the inability to see the blurry faces in image 10 were attempts to disorient the viewer. In the end I relied mostly on light, and the lack of light, to create the eerie mood.
