Layla

Faragallah.

My sustained investigation explored shape, pattern, form, and texture in the context of figure ground relationships, and worked to make the two equally important in the creation of my series of 2D designs.

I began my concentration working from observation, as I have done in the past, though focused more on the background than I traditionally would have. As I moved forward, I began to develop backgrounds with patterned paper and house paints in order to create a sense of continuity between the background and foreground, which helped blend the space between the object and what was around it in a fluid way. This process gave the effect of realistic objects suspended in abstract space and later inspired me to explore positive and negative space. This is apparent in pieces 3-6, as I played with patterns and shape to give depth to more realistic objects. The end of my sustained investigation is marked by the splicing and rearrangement of my art, as I worked to minimize what separates the foreground from background. By my final piece, there is a resemblance of a realistic object but it is intermeshed with the textures and colors of the background, which I feel embodies my investigation.
