I was driven by the question "How does one's relationship to women affect their identity and consciousness?" I wanted the women who shaped my identity and perception of life to be at the center of my sustained investigation. I was inspired by most drag queen's deep admiration for women, who are the essential influence on the art form of drag. As a gender-fluid person, I rarely see gender-variant bodies in mainstream art. I wanted to create an uncensored, realistic portfolio that exhibits my interpretation of femininity: undefinable and liberating. Many of the women that I included have been strong inspirations for me from a distance, as I haven't met any of them. Piece number 2 portrays a transgender woman named Nefertiti Jackson, who died in the Summer of 2019. She called an ambulance for herself during an asthma attack, arrived at the hospital still breathing, and then passed in the emergency room because the care of black transwomen is not prioritized. She indirectly gave me the strength to create this portfolio, thus honoring my transgender sisters around the world and those who have died.
