In my sustained investigation, I wanted to explore freeing myself from the confines of realism in favor of painting freer figures. As I developed as an artist up to the beginning of my sustained investigation, I often found myself believing I had to sacrifice creativity in order to become more technically proficient. As a result, I had become uninspired by my own artwork, which had become more of a way to exactly replicate reality than to warp it. With my sustained investigation, I sought to free myself from the confines of realism by taking warping my subjects and playing with materials. I started with very realistic portraits made almost exclusively in acrylic, and gradually changed my work and the materials to make them more creative and less realistic. As I did this, I also began to use mediums less conducive to extreme realism. At the beginning of my sustained investigation, I used materials that allowed me to correct mistakes, making it easier to create very realistic images. As the investigation progressed, however, I began to play with more exposed, less forgiving mediums like pen and watercolor.
